How to Choose 3 Point Linkage Parts
Replacing 3 point linkage parts seems simple — until you are standing in front of five bins of pins and top links wondering which one fits your tractor. Step 1: Know Your Hitch Category
Three-point hitches are built to standard dimensions set by ASAE (American Society of Agricultural Engineers) Standard S217, which aligns with ISO 730. The category determines pin diameters and link spacing, so it is the single most important thing to identify.

How to find your category: Check your tractor’s operator manual, look for a category marking on the lift arms or implement, or simply measure the pin diameters and link spacing using the table above.
Note on “limited” Category 1: Some sub-compact tractors (e.g., certain 20-25 HP models) use a “limited” Category 1 hitch — lower to the ground with less lift height and narrower opening than standard Category 1. If your tractor is a sub-compact, confirm whether it takes standard or limited Category 1 implements before ordering.
Note on Category 3N/4N: Narrow (N) variants of Categories 3 and 4 exist for specialty and row-crop tractors. They share pin diameters with the standard category but use narrower spacing. If your tractor is flagged as 3N or 4N, match the N variant.
Step 2: Understand Each Component’s Job
Top Link (Center Link / Upper Link)
The top link is the adjustable arm between the tractor and the top of the implement. It controls the implement’s angle of attack — critical for plow depth, mower leveling, and blade tilt. Top links are threaded so you can lengthen or shorten them.
What to check when replacing:
- End type: ball end vs. hook/rapid-hook end — match what your implement pin accepts
- Thread: UNC (Unified Coarse, common in North America) vs. metric (M22, M24, M27, M30) — measure the thread with a thread gauge
- Working length: measure center-to-center between the ball bores with the link at mid-adjustment, and check the total adjustment range you need
- Category: pin diameter of the ball bores must match your implement’s top pin
Lower Link Arms and Lift Arms
The two lower links carry the implement’s weight and raise/lower it through the lift arms. Most tractors have fixed left lower links and an adjustable right lower link (the leveling assembly) that tilts the implement.
What to check when replacing:
- Ball bore diameter in the lower link end — must match the implement’s lower pins
- Ball outer diameter — must match the socket it seats into
- Lift arm pin size where the lift arm connects to the lower link
Stabilizers and Check Chains
Stabilizers (sway bars or chain stabilizers) stop the implement from swinging side to side. Check chains — sometimes called sway chains — do the same job with chain links and a turnbuckle adjuster.
What to check when replacing:
- Mounting style: pin-and-clip, bolt-on bracket, or hook style — match your tractor’s lower link mounting points
- Adjustment type: turnbuckle, ratchet, or chain-link adjustment
- Category: stabilizer length and end fittings are category-specific
Pins and Balls
Every connection point in the linkage uses a pin or ball. Hitch pins secure implements to the drawbar; top link pins and lower link pins secure the links themselves; balls provide the pivoting connection inside link ends.
What to check when replacing:
- Pin diameter — the critical dimension (e.g., 3/4 in for Category 1, 1 in for Category 2)
- Pin length — must clear the implement boss plus the retaining clip hole
- Head style — bent handle, straight handle, or no head (for retained or flush applications)
- Ball bore — inside diameter that the pin passes through
- Ball O.D. — outside diameter that seats in the link socket
Step 3: Measure Before You Order
When you have the part in hand, verify these five measurements:
- Pin bore diameter — use a caliper, not a tape measure, for accuracy
- Thread type and pitch — UNC threads are measured in threads per inch; metric in millimeters per thread
- Working length — for top links, center-to-center between ball bores at mid-adjustment
- Link spacing — distance between the lower link attachment points
- Socket size — for balls, the inside of the link socket where the ball seats
